I’m working on getting my speaking section thought-out for the upcoming Moms on Fire Retreat and got a nice overnight download.
Thought I would share it with all of you.
I’ve never been good at explaining things using analogies. They just don’t come to me instinctively so this one is a rarity!
Desire Mapping. One of the big sections and activities we do is look at what we’re grateful for that’s working in our lives and what isn’t. We use the “isn’t working” list to show us how we do want to feel.
Right now, we are are making plans to renovate… the kitchen. Do you want to change some things in your kitchen or even a bathroom? Play along!
So I list all the things I really dislike and want to change about the space. The countertops, the bar height section, the cabinets (color, size) etc…..When I review that list, there is no need to dwell on how crappy it is. We use it to show us what we do want! non-tiled countertop, counter height island, to-the-ceiling cabinets that are hung properly. Now I can create a vision for myself for how I DO want it to look.
When we look at aspects of our lives, feelings that certain situations, relationships, states we just aren’t happy with, we take these, assign a feeling/state to them, and then ask “what is the opposite?”
The cool thing about looking at the different life areas like essence & spirituality, relationships & society, or body & wellness is that we don’t have to save up $50,000 before we can make those visions a reality.
Will things happen overnight? Likely no, but by having our core desired feelings (our blueprint for the perfect kitchen or bath) we have a compass for daily, weekly, or moment by moment actions, states, ways of being.
Take this a step further: consult with friends or a facilitator. In remodel speak this would be like hiring a designer. They can help take your thoughts and get them laser focused or open areas you didn’t think existed as options. Maybe you are limiting yourself and you don’t even realize it. Another set of eyes and ears can see that. Desire Mapping with friends is a great way to create meaningful connection. And friends are so great at helping us find creative solutions to our little dilemmas, aren’t they?
In group work, sometimes its a fellow participant who shines a light on something for you- directly or indirectly. Sometimes the facilitator asking for that extra piece of home practice or noticing a pattern can give you that little glimpse.
I encourage you to try this exercise. Do it for a room in your home. Then do it for some small, semi-controllable aspect of your life.
What you don’t like points the way to what or how you would rather it be. Then go about finding creative solutions to doing, being, or experiencing those in a way that feels so. much. better. to you.
There is a little more work than just this exercise to help us notice patterns so we can home in on just a few focused feelings that represent us, but its a damn good start and a nice little glimpse into part of the process.
